Department of Zoology

The Department of Zoology offers a well-structured undergraduate programme that equips students with comprehensive knowledge of animal life — from cellular biology to ecology and fishery sciences. The department provides theory and practical training using modern zoological tools, models, charts, and laboratory equipment, fostering scientific temperament and research-oriented skills among students.

Paper II — Cell Biology

Components and types of cells and organelles; energy generation and tissue organisation; coordination between organelles; mitotic cell division.

Paper IV — Arthropoda to Echinodermata & Protochordata

Major concepts across Zoology disciplines; characters and development of animals; use of modern zoological tools, models, and charts.

Paper V — Genetics I

Heredity and variation; role of genetics in evolution; Mendelian inheritance; genetic disorders; chromosomal role and genic inheritance.

Paper VII — Vertebrate Zoology

Life cycle and development of vertebrate animals; general characters, embryology, and placenta of mammals.

Paper VIII — Genetics II

Gene control and expression; DNA structure and function; replication, transcription, and translation; population genetics; chromosomal inheritance; modern genetic technology in medical science.

Paper XI — Animal Physiology

Fundamental processes controlling body functions; integration of organ system regulation; mechanisms from cellular to whole-animal level; life-regulating processes.

Paper XII — Biochemistry & Endocrinology

Digestion and absorption of proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids; fat bodies, fatty acid metabolism; biochemistry and physiology of endocrine function.

Paper XV — Ecology

Ecological systems at different spatial and temporal levels; abiotic and biotic factors; food chains, food webs, ecological pyramids; ecological succession and ecosystems.

Paper XVI — Fishery Science I

Fish culture, pond management, transport of fish seeds; harvesting, preservation, processing, and fish pathology; field and laboratory practical work.

Paper XIX — Evolution

Evidences and theories of evolution; role of genetics; Hardy-Weinberg law; natural forces in evolution; speciation; heredity and variation.

Paper XX — Fishery Science II

Definition and history of fisheries; brackish water, major reservoir, and capture fisheries

Upon completion of the B.Sc. Zoology programme, graduates will be able to:
